Is the Susquehanna River suitable for beginners?

Am I allowed to launch and/or take out my own boat at Susquehanna Outfitters?
Q. Is the Susquehanna River suitable for beginners?
A. Yes. The Susquehanna is a good river to learn how to paddle a canoe or kayak in shallow, slow-moving water. The Susquehanna and our local creeks are often shallow enough for all ages. Every trip includes a safety talk, including a brief intro to paddling. Nervous about paddling for the first time? Sign up to do a kayak, canoe, or paddleboard lesson with an experienced guide!
Q. Do I need to wear a life jacket?
A. All paddlers must have a life jacket in their boat at all times required by law and we STRONGLY encourage that you wear it. We provide high-quality, clean, well-fitted life jackets so that you will feel comfortable wearing this essential piece of equipment. Children 12 and under MUST wear a life jacket at all times on the water.
Q. Can I purchase a gift card?
A. Yes, gift cards can be purchased for any amount on our website. Gift cards can be used for rentals and ANY event we offer.
Q. What is the minimum age allowed?
A. If the water is at normal levels, the minimum age is 5. Summer drought levels are safe for all ages, while higher levels are more challenging. We prefer to have parents/guardians that take children out on the water to be fairly experienced, especially when children are younger in age.
ASK OUR STAFF ABOUT CURRENT CONDITIONS. We reserve the right to not put you and your family on the water in dangerous conditions, whether it be for weather, water levels, or skill level. Safety is our main priority!
Q. Do you accept credit cards?
A. We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover Card, American Express, or cash. We strongly encourage everyone to make their reservations online to ensure there are boats and spots available for you. The card holder assumes responsibility for all cancellation and refund policies.
The card will be charged at the time of the reservation and can also be split between multiple cards online. Group reservations can be invoiced and paid with a business check. NO personal checks accepted.
Q. Do I need a reservation?
A. We strongly encourage reservations, especially during our busy season. We have canoes, kayaks, and SUPs (stand up paddleboards). A reservation ensures that we have the boat or board you want available upon your arrival.
Q. What is your cancellation policy?
A. For cancellations made less than 24 hours before the scheduled trip, there will be no refund issued. For cancellations between 72 and 24 hours, you will receive a 50% refund via gift card. There is a full refund via gift card for cancellations made more than 72 hours before the scheduled trip. Group reservations (8 or more boats) cancelled at least 7 days before the scheduled trip will be refunded via gift card. Cancellations made between 7 days and 72 hours ahead of trip will be refunded 50% of total, and cancellations made less than 72 hours will not receive a refund. There is a full refund via gift card for trips cancelled by Susquehanna Outfitters because of weather or dangerous conditions. We try to reschedule your trip whenever possible.
Q. Can I bring a cooler?
A. Yes! We encourage you to take a break, eat lunch, swim, and enjoy the beauty around you. But please, NO ALCOHOL, large coolers, styrofoam, or glass. Soft-pack coolers work best for kayaks. Life in the middle of the river can be very hot in the summer, so we strongly encourage groups to bring water. Susquehanna Outfitters typically has drinks available for purchase.
Q. Do I need shoes?
A. Yes. You can easily injure your feet if they are not covered. We suggest water shoes, old sneakers, and sandals or crocs with a strap. Flip flops are not appropriate river shoes. We do have some shoes you may borrow at the shop.
Q. What about bugs? (I hate bugs!)
A. Mosquitoes live in the vegetation along the bank and are seldom a problem on the water. Most insects on the water, like dragonflies and mayflies, are beautiful and do not bite. (Don’t be a hater). Mosquito bands are available for purchase if you don't believe us!
Q. Do you rent canoes and kayaks to explore other rivers?
A. Yes! We have canoes and kayaks available to rent for off-site trips. We have many options in our "Off Site Rentals" reservations to fit your needs. We can provide tie-down straps to secure boat, or we can deliver and pick up (transportation fees apply). We also have guided trips on different creeks in the area during different times of the year. Check out our creek floats!
Q. Do you offer group discounts?
A. Yes! We offer a 10% discount for a rental of 8 or more boats. We can deliver and pick up your equipment and group (full-day rental and shuttle fees apply). Must ask for discount within 2 days of making the reservation.
Q. Am I allowed to launch and/or take out my own boat at Susquehanna Outfitters?
A. Yes. However, we ask you pay a $5/per person ramp fee. You can pay this in person or pay it online in advance by selecting the personal boat option. For an additional cost, you can also join us on a shuttled trip on our 3- or 6-hour trips or any of our special events.
